What does it mean to be a storyteller? In the telling and the hearing, I’ve grown more accepting of the ephemeral in my art, in the world around us, and in ourselves. Transformation is inevitable, a process of setting foot on a path whose end we can’t see. My artistic practice is like this.


	My artistic practice and the stories the materials tell are enmeshed---I try to stay fluid while committing to the material practices I reference. The confluence of creative work and writing responds to my curiosities and to complex spaces about identity, histories, and materials. I imagine reshaping spaces of belonging in this short time we have together.

Cones signal intersections of material entanglement:&#38;nbsp;

pyrometric cones tilting at temperature in a kiln

ceramic traffic cones heating and cooling in a controlled burn

pyriscent pine cones releasing seeds in a wildfire

In the creative research processes of “Pyrometric,” clay, ash, and Phos-Chek® flame retardant witness how fire produces the emotional residue of materials and people. Vital materials expand the scope of their own artistic agencies, even as human activity changes Earth on a geologic scale.

Cones and the patterns of Phos-Chek® dropped from planes mark spaces where the generative and the destructive seem indistinguishable. We are alert to how new collaborations may reveal themselves.
